The Chairperson of the Ghana Electoral Commission, Madam Jean Mensa has finally declared the Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama the winner of the 2024 Presidential elections in Ghana.
According to the EC Chair, who is the Returning Officer for the Presidential Elections, John Mahama secured a total of 6,328,397 representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.
John Mahamaβs main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP secured a total votes of 4,657,304 representing 41.61 % of the total valid votes cast.
The EC, however, revealed that the results were collated from 267 constituencies, since figures from 9 constituencies were yet to come in.
Madam Jean Mensa pointed out that per the EC’s calculation,Β “In the event that all the valid voters from the nine constituencies above, voted for the candidate whoΒ placed second (Dr Bawumia), the total number of votes he wouldΒ garner would be 5,604,420, representing 46.17%Β of the total valid votes which would have beenΒ 12,138,538. The inclusion of the outstanding Constituencies would have given the leadingΒ candidate 52.13%, which is still higher than theΒ 50% +1 and therefore still makes him the winner.”
Total valid votes at the end of the 2024 general elections came up to 11,191,422, with rejected ballots being 239,109.
The total votes cast were 11, 430,531, whereas the register had a total of 18, 774, 159.
The percentage of voter turnout in the 2024 election stands at 60.9% based on 267 constituencies.
